Frequently asked questions

How do I calculate a discount?

Multiply the price by the discount percentage and divide by 100 to get the amount off, then take that from the price. 25% off 80 is 80 × 25 ÷ 100 = 20 off, so you pay 60.

Is 20% off plus an extra 10% off the same as 30% off?

No. The extra 10% comes off the already reduced price. On 100, 20% off leaves 80, and 10% off 80 leaves 72. That’s 28% off in total, not 30%.

How do I work out the discount percentage from two prices?

Take the sale price from the original price, divide by the original price, then multiply by 100. From 50 down to 37.50 is 12.50 ÷ 50 × 100 = 25% off.

Is tax added before or after the discount?

Usually after. Sales tax and VAT are charged on the price you actually pay, so the calculator takes off the discounts first and then adds the tax.

How do I find the original price before a discount?

Divide the sale price by 1 minus the discount as a decimal. If 60 is the price after 25% off, the original was 60 ÷ 0.75 = 80.
